HHY
HHY (sometimes HHY Scumclash) is one alias of multi-instrumentalist and producer Jonathan Uliel Saldanha, and it represents the fusion of various musical and mental sources of interest: the bass pressure and psychedelic echo space of dub, the extatic cicles found on classical Indian music and Gamelan, the ominous soundscapes of John Carpenter soundtracks, and the paranormal fervor induced by voodoo rhythms.
In parallel to his ongoing collaborations with Raz Mesinai (a.k.a. Badawi, from the Tzadik and ROIR labels), Scott Nydegger (from Radon and coproducer of the series U.S.S.) and Nyko Ripit (the other menber of the band Fujako, with an album released on Wordsound Digital), his membership of Porto’s dub/beat/hip-hop platform Faca Monstro, and his participation in various projects in the Soopa label roster, he has since 2008 worked with The Macumbas, an assembled cast of musicians who complement his dense tapestries of subsonic frequencies and skeletal rhythms, in an evocation of the house band in a haunted Haitian hotel.
Under his own name, Jonathan Uliel Saldanha has also created several soundtracks based on induced mental cosmologies and big ensemble composition strategies, one of this sonic works comes of as the release “The Earth As A Floating Egg”.
